This is a POC to test the extensibility in xblock services. It is not intended to be merged, but to serve as example of what the ai_extensions service could provide using the entry_point.

Using this extension, I edited the poll xblock (had it installed in the env) to include call to the new service.

@XBlock.wants('settings')
@XBlock.needs('i18n')
@XBlock.wants('ai_extensions')
class PollBlock(PollBase, CSVExportMixin):

# ...

    @property
    def ai_extensions_service(self):
        """The ai_extensions runtime service, or None when the plugin isn't installed."""
        return self.runtime.service(self, 'ai_extensions')

    def get_ai_insight(self):
        """
        Ask the ai_extensions service for an insight about this poll's question.

        Returns the response text, or None when the service is unavailable
        (plugin not installed) or errors out — rendering must never break
        because of the optional AI feature.
        """
        service = self.ai_extensions_service
        if service is None:
            log.info('🤖 ai_extensions service not available; skipping AI insight')
            return None
        try:
            result = service.run_profile(
                'poll-question-insight',
                {
                    'question': self.question,
                    'answers': [value['label'] for __, value in self.answers],
                },
            )
            log.info('🤖 ai_extensions run_profile result: %s', result)
            return result.get('response')
        except Exception:  # pylint: disable=broad-except
            log.exception('🤖 ai_extensions run_profile failed; skipping AI insight')
            return None

# ...

    # finally this gets used by
    def student_view(self, context=None):
        ...

        context.update({
            'ai_insight': self.get_ai_insight(),
        })
