Medtronic LABS is a nonprofit health systems innovator with a mission to expand access to care for patients across the world. Formed in 2012 in partnership with Medtronic, we design and implement operating intelligence for health systems — combining strategy, technology, and in-country execution to unlock sustainable impact at scale.

We work with Ministries of Health and health systems to achieve meaningful improvements in population health outcomes through intelligent enhancement of existing digital infrastructure and care delivery models, starting with primary care.


The Problem

5 million people die each year in low- and middle-income countries from poor-quality care — not from lack of access, but from fragmented systems that fail to coordinate and act.

The gaps are predictable and preventable:

The result: patients fall through the cracks. A woman with diabetes is screened in her community, referred to a facility, prescribed medication — and told to return in 30 days. Six months later, her blood glucose is uncontrolled and complications begin. No one followed up. No one knew she hadn't returned.

🩺 SPICE — State-of-the-Art Integrated Primary Care Platform

SPICE is an open-source, certified Digital Public Good and Global Good for Health deployed in 8 countries. It transforms how patients are identified, managed, and supported across the community-to-facility care continuum.

Five core capabilities:

SPICE 2.0 expands clinical coverage to the full primary care spectrum: malaria, ANC, PNC, child health, iCCM, TB, HIV, and immunization — built to WHO and national guidelines, with offline-first CHW workflows.

🔗 Care Coordination Engine (CCE)

The CCE is a protocol-based open network that intelligently connects existing digital systems for longitudinal care coordination. It doesn't replace systems — it orchestrates them.

Observe → Detect → Act

The CCE reads events from existing EHRs and HIEs, identifies critical breaks (missed follow-ups, lost referrals, protocol drift), and drives time-bound actions to the right stakeholder — automatically.
