Impact of COVID-19 on the association between Type 2 diabetes and incidence of cardiovascular diseases
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition characterised by abnormally raised blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes can cause cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as heart attacks and strokes. People with type 2 diabetes suffered worse health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. They were more likely to die from COVID-19 or develop new health issues that affected their lives. Recent studies looking at new diagnosis of CVD among people with past COVID-19 compared to those without COVID-19 suggest long term negative health effects. CVD risks are substantially higher shortly after COVID-19 and decrease slowly over time but still remain significantly higher up to 49 weeks later. This risk was more apparent for those who had more severe COVID-19 requiring admission to hospital than those not hospitalised.
We want to understand any longer-term impacts of COVID-19 on CVD risk in people with type 2 diabetes as no studies have directly looked at this. Also, important risk factors in type 2 diabetes, such as age at diagnosis, have been overlooked in the COVID-19 literature.
In this study we will look at the association of type 2 diabetes and age at diagnosis with new onset CVD, considering the relevance of COVID-19.
