Import asset in javascript

I am sure this is not 100% theme related but maybe more of a webpack question. However, one has had this issue with tonik and can help?

I want to import an image in javascript. I try to do import cat from '../images/cat.png' but it fails, i tried many path combinations that could lead to the correct path but none worked. It leads to the following get request which lacks the theme path: GEThttp://localhost:3000/images/cat.png.
