One Semantic Model for all reports

The FinOps Toolkit currently offers 6 reports with those data sources:

Power BI report	Data Source
Cost summary	ADX
Rate optimization	ADX & Storage
Invoicing and chargeback	ADX
Workload optimization	ADX
Policy and governance	ADX
Data ingestion	ADX

So if I deploy all 6 reports I will have also 6 Semantic Models.

wouldn't be better if we can have 1 Semantic Model for all?

SOLUTION:

1. We add one report called FinOps Semantic Model and we publish that with zero dashboards on it --> now we have the Semantic Model online
2. When we open one of the 6 reports instead of prompting to enter the KQL URL the Power BI report should ask for a Power BI semantic model

This means that we only have to maintain 1 Semantic model and 1 refresh

Yes, the reason we haven't done that is a mix of complexity that would introduce in setup and general lack of experience with that. I did play around with this a few months ago, but don't recall where things ended up. I think I even saw a PBIX file floating around, but I didn't think that was supposed to be released, so I'm not sure about the state of it 😕 But the bottom line is we can definitely do this. It's just about getting it prioritized. I don't think we have an issue in the backlog for it. We should create one.
