Write and Save Files in Python
Welcome! This notebook will teach you about write the text to file in
the Python Programming Language. By the end of this lab, you'll know how
to write to file and copy the file.

Writing Files
We can open a file object using the method write() to save the text file
to a list. To write the mode, argument must be set to write w. Let's
write a file Example2.txt with the line: ``This is line A''
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{1}{\boxspacing}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
\PY{c+c1}{\PYZsh{} Write line to file}
\PY{k}{with} \PY{n+nb}{open}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{/resources/data/Example1.txt}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{,} \PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{w}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{)} \PY{k}{as} \PY{n}{writefile}\PY{p}{:}
\PY{n}{writefile}\PY{o}{.}\PY{n}{write}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s2}{\PYZdq{}}\PY{l+s+s2}{This is line A}\PY{l+s+s2}{\PYZdq{}}\PY{p}{)}
\end{Verbatim}
\end{tcolorbox}
We can read the file to see if it worked:
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{2}{\boxspacing}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
\PY{c+c1}{\PYZsh{} Read file}
\PY{k}{with} \PY{n+nb}{open}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{/resources/data/Example1.txt}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{,} \PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{r}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{)} \PY{k}{as} \PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{p}{:}
\PY{n+nb}{print}\PY{p}{(}\PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{o}{.}\PY{n}{read}\PY{p}{(}\PY{p}{)}\PY{p}{)}
\end{Verbatim}
\end{tcolorbox}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
This is line A
\end{Verbatim}
We can write multiple lines:
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{4}{\boxspacing}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
\PY{c+c1}{\PYZsh{} Write lines to file}
\PY{k}{with} \PY{n+nb}{open}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{/resources/data/Example1.txt}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{,} \PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{w}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{)} \PY{k}{as} \PY{n}{writefile}\PY{p}{:}
\PY{n}{writefile}\PY{o}{.}\PY{n}{write}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s2}{\PYZdq{}}\PY{l+s+s2}{This is line A}\PY{l+s+se}{\PYZbs{}n}\PY{l+s+s2}{\PYZdq{}}\PY{p}{)}
\PY{n}{writefile}\PY{o}{.}\PY{n}{write}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s2}{\PYZdq{}}\PY{l+s+s2}{This is line B}\PY{l+s+se}{\PYZbs{}n}\PY{l+s+s2}{\PYZdq{}}\PY{p}{)}
\end{Verbatim}
\end{tcolorbox}
The method .write() works similar to the method .readline(), except
instead of reading a new line it writes a new line. The process is
illustrated in the figure , the different colour coding of the grid
represents a new line added to the file after each method call.
You can check the file to see if your results are correct
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{5}{\boxspacing}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
\PY{c+c1}{\PYZsh{} Check whether write to file}
\PY{k}{with} \PY{n+nb}{open}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{/resources/data/Example2.txt}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{,} \PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{r}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{)} \PY{k}{as} \PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{p}{:}
\PY{n+nb}{print}\PY{p}{(}\PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{o}{.}\PY{n}{read}\PY{p}{(}\PY{p}{)}\PY{p}{)}
\end{Verbatim}
\end{tcolorbox}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
This is line A
This is line B
\end{Verbatim}
By setting the mode argument to append \textbf{a} you can append a new
line as follows:
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{6}{\boxspacing}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
\PY{c+c1}{\PYZsh{} Write a new line to text file}
\PY{k}{with} \PY{n+nb}{open}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{/resources/data/Example2.txt}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{,} \PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{a}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{)} \PY{k}{as} \PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{p}{:}
\PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{o}{.}\PY{n}{write}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s2}{\PYZdq{}}\PY{l+s+s2}{This is line C}\PY{l+s+se}{\PYZbs{}n}\PY{l+s+s2}{\PYZdq{}}\PY{p}{)}
\end{Verbatim}
\end{tcolorbox}
You can verify the file has changed by running the following cell:
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{ }{\boxspacing}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
\PY{c+c1}{\PYZsh{} Verify if the new line is in the text file}
\PY{k}{with} \PY{n+nb}{open}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{/resources/data/Example2.txt}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{,} \PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{r}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{)} \PY{k}{as} \PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{p}{:}
\PY{n+nb}{print}\PY{p}{(}\PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{o}{.}\PY{n}{read}\PY{p}{(}\PY{p}{)}\PY{p}{)}
\end{Verbatim}
\end{tcolorbox}
We write a list to a .txt file as follows:
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{ }{\boxspacing}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
\PY{c+c1}{\PYZsh{} Sample list of text}

\PY{n}{Lines}
\end{Verbatim}
\end{tcolorbox}
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{ }{\boxspacing}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
\PY{c+c1}{\PYZsh{} Write the strings in the list to text file}
\PY{k}{with} \PY{n+nb}{open}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{Example2.txt}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{,} \PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{w}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{)} \PY{k}{as} \PY{n}{writefile}\PY{p}{:}
\PY{k}{for} \PY{n}{line} \PY{o+ow}{in} \PY{n}{Lines}\PY{p}{:}
\PY{n+nb}{print}\PY{p}{(}\PY{n}{line}\PY{p}{)}
\PY{n}{writefile}\PY{o}{.}\PY{n}{write}\PY{p}{(}\PY{n}{line}\PY{p}{)}
\end{Verbatim}
\end{tcolorbox}
We can verify the file is written by reading it and printing out the
values:
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{ }{\boxspacing}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
\PY{c+c1}{\PYZsh{} Verify if writing to file is successfully executed}
\PY{k}{with} \PY{n+nb}{open}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{Example2.txt}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{,} \PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{r}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{)} \PY{k}{as} \PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{p}{:}
\PY{n+nb}{print}\PY{p}{(}\PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{o}{.}\PY{n}{read}\PY{p}{(}\PY{p}{)}\PY{p}{)}
\end{Verbatim}
\end{tcolorbox}
We can again append to the file by changing the second parameter to a.
This adds the code:
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{ }{\boxspacing}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
\PY{c+c1}{\PYZsh{} Append the line to the file}
\PY{k}{with} \PY{n+nb}{open}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{Example2.txt}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{,} \PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{a}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{)} \PY{k}{as} \PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{p}{:}
\PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{o}{.}\PY{n}{write}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s2}{\PYZdq{}}\PY{l+s+s2}{This is line D}\PY{l+s+se}{\PYZbs{}n}\PY{l+s+s2}{\PYZdq{}}\PY{p}{)}
\end{Verbatim}
\end{tcolorbox}
We can see the results of appending the file:
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{ }{\boxspacing}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
\PY{c+c1}{\PYZsh{} Verify if the appending is successfully executed}
\PY{k}{with} \PY{n+nb}{open}\PY{p}{(}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{Example2.txt}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{,} \PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{l+s+s1}{r}\PY{l+s+s1}{\PYZsq{}}\PY{p}{)} \PY{k}{as} \PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{p}{:}
\PY{n+nb}{print}\PY{p}{(}\PY{n}{testwritefile}\PY{o}{.}\PY{n}{read}\PY{p}{(}\PY{p}{)}\PY{p}{)}
\end{Verbatim}
\end{tcolorbox}
Copy a File
Let's copy the file Example2.txt to the file Example3.txt:
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{ }{\boxspacing}

\PY{n}{writefile}\PY{o}{.}\PY{n}{write}\PY{p}{(}\PY{n}{line}\PY{p}{)}
\end{Verbatim}
\end{tcolorbox}
We can read the file to see if everything works:
\begin{tcolorbox}[breakable, size=fbox, boxrule=1pt, pad at break*=1mm,colback=cellbackground, colframe=cellborder]
\prompt{In}{incolor}{ }{\boxspacing}
\begin{Verbatim}[commandchars=\\\{\}]
