What feature would you like to see?

/auth command (or CLI command like code auth) which allows the user to explicitly choose to sign in via an OpenAI account or use the API key. Currently if OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable is present the program does not present the authentication prompt and there is no way to explicitly choose the other method regardless.

is the way to do this today. Even if is in your environment, running (without ) launches the ChatGPT browser flow and writes the refreshed tokens to . On the next run the CLI will use ChatGPT auth instead of the API key. If you want to prefer ChatGPT whenever both are available, add to (documented in docs/authentication.md). Given that, we’ll close this out, but feel free to reopen if you hit a concrete case where this doesn’t work.

If you want to prefer ChatGPT whenever both are available, add preferred_auth_method = "chatgpt" to ~/.codex/config.toml (documented in docs/authentication.md). Given that, we will close this out, but feel free to reopen if you hit a concrete case where this does not work.
