Issue description

When there are a large number of articles—over 100 or so—the search engine becomes very slow and fails to search for keywords, including Chinese terms. It is recommended to add support for search engines such as Algolia, DocSearch, or Meilisearch.

I noticed an issue: the search engine is fast on the local server, but it becomes slow after being deployed to GitHub Pages

Search slow/broken on GitHub Pages custom domains

Fuse search works fine on hugo server, but on GitHub Pages with a custom domain it is slow or never returns results. The search index is loaded via data-url="{{ "" | absLangURL }}", so the request goes to the absolute baseURL (e.g. https://user.github.io/index.json) instead of the current origin.

In my case that URL 301-redirects to http://custom-domain/... (HTTP). On an HTTPS page the browser blocks it as mixed content; search.js only handles status 200 and fails silently, so Fuse never initializes. Locally there is no redirect chain, so the same code works.

A full-text index.json (~800KB+) also makes the first open slow when the request does succeed. Please consider using relLangURL / same-origin fetch, RelPermalink in the index, a smaller default index, and basic error handling in search.js.
