I did some work on this and the results are pretty mixed. While Rust seems to be faster when the JSON documents are smaller and/or the queries are more complex, the native Python version usually wins with more complex documents, likely because a lot of the wrapper effort is spent converting from Python land to Rust land. It's not a slam dunk either way and would probably be very dependent on the use case to decide which option to use: flatter documents would make the Python wrapper a decent choice (say 2-3x faster), but with complex, nested documents the native Python implementation was 2-10x faster than the wrapper. I'm happy to share the results and can open a PR if anyone wants more details or wants to see if I'm missing something obvious.
