Issue #550 identified Gates Foundation Grand Challenges as the most accessible funding entry point for Trij.

Grand Challenges Global Health (gatesfoundation.org) is a rolling call for proposals — no fixed deadline, open year-round. Awards range from $100K to $1M.

Prerequisites

Before applying:

  • Complete the bias audit (issue Bias Audit: Run Real Inference on GPU & Package Results #531 / inference block)
  • Prepare 1-page application concept note
  • Gather pilot outcome data (patient volumes, triage accuracy, CHW satisfaction)
  • Identify potential research partner (e.g., Strathmore University, UoN)
  • Review past funded Grand Challenges projects for formatting reference

Submission Process

  1. Visit https://gcgh.grandchallenges.org/
  2. Navigate to "Submit a Proposal" → rolling call
  3. Upload concept note (3-5 pages) + budget
  4. Wait for review (~4-8 weeks)
  5. If invited: submit full proposal
